Verified ReviewerIolo is crooked and deceiving.
The last time I extended my subscription, they added a $19.95 per month service I didn't ask for. It might have been in the fine print, but I was just trying to extend my subscription.
- Software works ok
- Customer service is so bad it stinks
- Deceptive marketing

Verified ReviewerRobbed by Iolo
Back in 2022, I canceled the online offer for System Mechanic Professional I got in an email and then called a phone saleswoman for Iolo instead to order a cheap version of the basic version of System Mechanic for just $9.95. For me, System Mechanic was just a backup.
Recently, I found out that I was also billed $19.95 per month for Live Tech which was never mentioned by the phone saleswoman. I did not discover this before the year ran out, so this fraud cost me 12 * $19.95 = $239.40. This is pure fraud. There was no fine print to possibly justify this since I had canceled the online offer before calling the phone saleswoman, who never mentioned anything about Live Tech.
I don't care about the policies of this criminal organization. We have laws in the United States. I will be contacting both the Attorney General of California and the Attorney General of the United States about this fraud. This company needs to be shut down.
The Attorney General of California is supposed to be protecting us from fraud coming from that state.
Collectively, we may be able to get a response. Apparently, I need to check my bank statement every day.

Verified ReviewerI was robbed $239.40.
I was never told about this Live Tech nonsense for $19.95 a month when I spoke to a phone saleswoman in July of 2022 to get a cheap version of basic System Mechanic for just $9.95. I had canceled the online offer before speaking to this phone saleswoman.

Verified ReviewerCharge 19.95 per month for something I did not order . Not allowed to unsubscribe from monthly charge. System Mechanic prevented access to mail programme. Need to switch it off for mail prgram to work
I found I was being billed monthly for a service that was useless to me. When I called, I was told I could not unsubscribe from it.

Verified Reviewer | Toronto, OntarioI have trieda to subscribe for one month.Ioloinstead turned it into renewable mothly subscription.I tried to access my account, Iolo tells me there is no account available. s
Iolo without notifying me changed my trial subscription into monthly renewable one. When trying to access my account, Iolo tells me there is no account with my email although the email was verified.
There seems to be no way to access or cancel short of going through the bank.
Recommending: Provide clear access to accounts. Enable review of subscription and opportunity for cancellation clearly visible.
User's recommendation: Stay away from Iolo.Product is mediocre and annoying in extreme, customer service is impossible to access, website does not provide info about subscription or opportunity to change/ cancel/ modify. The policy borders on fraud.
They added a subscription to a standalone product that I paid in full
I paid in full for a stand alone product and they cryptically added some sort of tech support that got billed every month. I didn't order tech support. Just bought the product.
User's recommendation: Don't Buy it. Find something else

Verified ReviewerIOLO STOLE MY MONEY
First MY failure. I failed to notice sooner that IOLO was charging me 19.95 every month, sooner than I did.
But that's what they did for several months. I didn't ask for their services just the virus protection. But they said what I purchased included a bundle with their software support services. So I went back and looked at the website I ordered from.
Sure enough, in the fine print on the very last sentence of a 4 paragraph fine print. It included the explanation of the bundle in one final sentence. I've been with them since 2001 and I can promise you they've gone downhill over the years. Including some pretty cheeky practices and pop-up ads they never used to have.
I'll no longer use them again. Even if another company does similar activities. At least it'll look different! But no, they've gotten theur last penny from me.
BTW When I chatted with them the first thing I said was they've stolen from me.
They then spent 20 minutes trying to convince me to spend more money on more products. Before they ever got to the crux of the problem.STAY AWAY

Verified ReviewerGarbage Customer Service and Tricky Monthly Fees in the Fine Print
This company has turned into complete garbage. I have been a customer for several years, but now it seems more important for them to crap on their customers than to actually be helpful.
Apparently, there was fine print I didn't see, and now I'm being charged 19.95 a month, and they will not cancel it. So now, I have to contact my bank and write a letter to the Business Bureau.
- Software works
- Company doesnt give a crap about its customers
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: STAY AWAY, You've been warned
Charged for tech support and never ordered it.
Recently purchased a discounted copy of software for 19.98. Saw charge on card, now it's a battle for a refund.

Verified ReviewerHave a bad experience with this
I have an older PC. It ran slowly, so I decided to use this product to solve this issue.
I tried it and there was no improvement at all.
I contacted them to cancel the subscription, but the lady said that I couldn't cancel as it was their policy. This company is a big scam.

Verified ReviewerExtremly poor customer service.
Decided in Feb. 24 I did not want one of their products.
It was a monthly subscription billed to my credit card. Called in Feb. to cancel. Got my credit card bill 3/18/24 still being charged.
Called 3/19 asked to have the Feb charge removed. Told 'outside the window' for a refund. Said I should have asked sooner. Just got the bill, how was I to know the charged was still going to show up?
Asked to speak to a supervisor. 'Not available on the phone' ??? Asked to have someone call me.
'We don't do that' ??? Very poor response by customer service.
- Like system mechanic
- Worst customer service experience ever
Preferred solution: Let people know how terrible their customer dept can be.
User's recommendation: Be very carefull about signing up for recurring auto charges.
Loss of trust: surprised to find I'm paying them $240 p.a. for something I don't want.
Trust lost: Surprised at monthly payments to a subscription I wasn't aware of.
I was surprised when Paypal notified me I was paying a monthly subscription (about $240 per year) to ReaIDefense for "Tech Support" which I neither want nor need. After some emails to Iolo I now understand how I came to be signed up to make monthly payments to RealDefense LLC.
Apparently the commitment was bundled with my renewal of System Mechanic back in November.
RealDefense pointed out that the terms were communicated during that renewal, the implication being that my subsequent experience of paying for something I don't want must surely be down to my own stupidity.
The fact is, I have been using System Mechanic for over 20 years and have got used to annual renewals.
I guess I was anticipating the normal routine, so wasn't paying full attention and didn't notice the extra commitment which has been bundled with the software this year.
Yes, that sure makes me feel stupid.
It was just fortunate that Paypal did alert me when the new paid subscription began on 20th December.
I notice however that RealDefense LLC didn't send any sort of confirmation. This seems to be a sign that the deliberate marketing strategy behind the Tech Support subscription is set up to passively renew, with the added benefit that RealDefense can take advantage of (stupid) customers who may not be aware they signed up to a subscription, or may have forgotten (I suspect this is the real purpose of the "30-day trial" period).
As long as no further confirmations are sent to warn the customeer, then the subscription can roll on indefinitely. And if people aren't even aware they have the subscription, they won't even use the service!
Good for RealDefense!
I'm sure that RealDefense marketing think this is a great strategy, and maybe it is bringing in lots of cash to that organisation.
However I take a really dim view of companies which are not fully up front about how they are taking my money. I also don't like dealing with organisations whose business plan relies on making me feel stupid.
I don't intend to renew RealDefense software again.
After more than 20 years of using Iolo's software, the new pushy marketing strategy has lost the trust of this customer.
User's recommendation: Stay away from this company.
Chat agents do not give customer service
Most chat agents won't let you talk a technical until they sell you their products, even though you don't want more items. This company does not have a phone numbering for Australia.
The numbers that they give Telstra information are incorrect or invalid. So for Australian users, the only contact is Via their Chat Site. If you need to speak to their people in the Accounts Department, the Chat Agents inform you "Sorry we can't do that".
Accounts or sales personnel won't even phone you to sort out my problem.
If and when you can connect to a Technician to repair your computer, they are great at what they do. The technicians are brilliant but can't say the same for the Chat Site Agents
To Australian users Beware, look in Australia for Technical support.
- Absolutely wonderful technician
- Very poor customer service by their chat site agents
Preferred solution: I just need to sort out my issues with their accounts department
User's recommendation: With legitimated Phone numbers that are for Australian Users Don't use them

Resolved: Difficulty in contacting the company to resolve issues
Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with full refund. Company agreed to refund two payments for tech support and cancelled subscriptions as requested.
Used System Mechanic for many years but when upgrades to Windows 10 Pro conflicts occurred with my security software so decided to remove SM and cancel subscription. Found it impossible to contact Iolo Technologies by phone or email from UK and could see charges being made automatically for tech support.
By chance found the Pissed Consumer website and all was quickly resolved. Very impressed and relieved, thank you.
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: WWindows 10 /11 already has the equivalent software as System Mechanic
Iolo sets up unauthorized billing, customers can no longer access their own accounts.
The parent company of Iolo, RealDefense, LLC, sets up unauthorized billing without the users knowledge or consent. Users can no longer access their own account.
After a call to IOLO, Tech support told me that I would no longer be billed automatically, would not give a refund, and that users can no longer view their accounts. Then he wanted access to my PC. I refused. I received emails that my subscriptions were cancelled.
I uninstalled the programs (that I thought were great products). And now I want to warn other IOLO and RealDefense, LLC product users to steer clear of these products.
User's recommendation: STAY AWAY FROM IOLO AND REALDEFENSE,LLC products
